Materials needed:

  • (2) 2x4 boards

  • 110” of 7/8 doweling (I bought three 48” lengths)

  • (10) 3/4 copper end caps

  • 5 min quick set epoxy

  • 15/16 paddle bit

Cut each 2x4 at 6’.

I also cut one end of each 2x4 at 10 degree angle. This will be the bottom of the legs. I find by putting a slight angle on the bottoms, it helps rest better on the floor when leaned again the wall.

Measure out the spacing for the rungs

From the bottom, measure 16’ up. Put a mark in the centre of the 2x4. This will be the spot for the bottom rung. If you want a ladder with 4 rungs, measure 16” increments for a total of 4 rungs.

If you want a ladder with 5 rungs, after you measure 16” from the bottom, measure and make marks at 12” increments.

Drill holes for dowels

I used a 15/16 paddle bit to drill out the holes for the dowels. I clamped the two legs together and drilled though both at the same time to ensure that the holes lined up when the ladder was standing.

To prevent tear out, I clamped a scrap board under the legs.

After you have the holes drilled, sand the legs smooth.

Cut dowels to length

Insert the dowels into the hole on the legs and allow them to stick out 1.5”.

To secure the copper end caps, I used a small amount of 5 min epoxy on the inside before I put them into the dowel ends.

I also put some epoxy on the legs were the dowels slide though. This helps to eliminate wobble in the ladder.
