Changing Trends, and My Thoughts.

The last few weeks, I have come across countless blog posts about what the new trends will be for 2021 and what to leave behind in 2020. I have so many thoughts about all of this. I cannot wait to share them with you.

Color is in, color is out. No wait, color is back in? Farmhouse style is huge. Farmhouse style is so last year. Boho style is the must have. Wait, you did Boho in your house? That is so yesterday. Stencilled floors? what? that is so last month. I CANNOT believe you do not have a wood wall in your house! Umm… what where you thinking when you did that wood wall? It is sooooo last year. Honestly, how does one keep up?

My answer to that: YOU DON’T!

Well, unless you have endless amounts of money, then it may be possible. Or it may also be possible if you are a designer and are sponsored by companies and supplied with things like flooring and paint for free. Don’t be hatin’ cuz I said that. Its just my honest opinion about that all. And if you are a designer and have the pleasure of changing things all the time without breaking your bank account, just know. I am very jealous of you.

Trying to keep up with trends is exhausting. They are forever changing. Just when you think you are trendy, you blink your eyes and the new look you loved so much is a thing of the past.

Here are a few of the things that I have read about that are no longer “in”.

faux wood or stone

stencilled floors or walls

window trim that matches the walls

neutral colors

white oak flooring

barn doors

shiplap

mid century furniture

As I look through that list, I can’t help my shake my head. Were we not being told the whole year, neutrals help brighten a space and make it look clean. Apparently now, you should be painting bold dark colours and using bright accent colours in spaces. Better load up your truck and take all those neutral pillows and decor to the dump. Were we all not suppose to rip out our dark floors and replace them with white oak because it brightens the room? Better run to the store January 1 and start replacing that fresh new flooring with a dark herringbone pattern. Oh and the floor and walls, don’t forget about those. Time and time again we have seen people paint over their tile and make a pretty stencilled floor. I guess everyone is now going to be purchasing paint stripper in bulk to remove it now because that was soooo 2020. And while you are replacing all the new stuff you just put in your home, don’t forget to rip down all the shiplap and toss out those barn doors too. Because did you not hear. Those are also a trend of the past. Honestly? I just can’t keep up. I’m exhausted.

Its so easy to get caught up on how your house is “suppose to look”. Trust me, Pinterest and instagram have made me rethink the way I have been styling and decorating my house time and time again. Over time however, I have learned to love the style that makes me happy. Not try and force myself to love something just because it’s the latest trend.

Your home should represent YOU. No one else. I don’t believe anyone should ever decorate a space in their home, because it’s how the internet says it should look. You are the one that has to live in the space. When you walk into a room it should bring you joy.

Honestly, we will never be able to keep up. No matter how hard we try. Style is forever changing. We see it not only in interior design, but in everything around us. Clothing. Accessories. Makeup. Hair styles. Vehicles. Everything!

I’m a firm believer, that if a piece of decor brings you joy, it was meant to be. Just because a few articles say something isn’t trendy, doesn’t mean it still can’t make you happy and you can’t incorporate it into your design space. So, if a wood wall, barn door or a stencilled floor brings a smiles to your face, then its meant to be in your space regardless if it’s the latest trend or not.

The way things seem to work, it wouldn’t surprise me, if in 2025 all of the styles they claim you should leave behind in 2020 will be the newest style trends for 2025. It really is, just a big full circle.

Set your own trends. Create your own styles. This is what separates us from others.
