Simple Leather Handle

It is always crazy to me how much hardware, such as handles can cost. Something so small and simple, shouldn't break the bank.

When I got asked to replicate a console table from Urban barn, I knew I needed to do my best at replicating everything even the leather handles.

I started to search for some to order, but the prices didn't seem logical. Spending 20+ dollars on one handle just didn't seem right.  So, I decided to take a leap and attempt to make some of my own.

Follow along with me and I will show you how I took a piece of genuine leather and created simple gorgeous handles.

Materials Needed:

  • Genuine leather (mine was a 8.5"x11" piece,

you should be able to find some at any craft store)

  • scissors

  • spray paint (I used black)

  • bolts, washers and nuts (I used 6-32X1")

  • paper for template

Tools needed:

  • Drill

  • Drill bit

  • screwdriver and wrech

  • clamps

Lets Get Started!

1) Spray paint your blots, nuts and washers, so that they can dry while you are making the handle. I chose to spray mine black. I used rustoleum spray paint. This step is optional.

2) Next, decide how big you need the handle to be and sketched out a template on a piece of paper. The handle size will really depend on the drawer that you are putting it on. My handle was about 8" long and just over 1" wide. Once you are happy with how the handle template looks, cut it out of the paper

3) place your template on the your leather piece and trace it out. I used a washable marker. A pen or pencil would work as well

4) cut out the handle with your scissors. You will need very sharp scissors. Mine were a bit dull and I struggled a little cutting through the leather.

5 ) Once the handle is cut out, mark out centre on your drawer front and clamp down the handle ends. Do not clamp the handle down flat, be sure to position it so that the centre is raised so that you are able to grab then handle to open the drawer.

6) drill out the holes for the bolts. I chose to do two on each side of the handle, but you can choose to do only 1 if you prefer. I drilled though the leather and the drawer front with a smaller bit to start and then used a larger bit. I find if you do this it helps prevent tear out and accuracy.

7) Insert your hardware into the holes on the handle, and into the drawer front.

8) Tighten the bolts with the nuts on the inside of the drawer.
